The Summer Quiet Time Reset: Building a Sun-Soaked Devotional Rhythm

The first morning of summer has a different quality of light. It comes in earlier, golden, fuller — and somehow the day feels both longer and looser. The school papers are packed away. The schedule has softened. And right there, in the middle of a quieter June morning, is an invitation: let your quiet time breathe.

For many of us, spring devotionals tend to look like steady, disciplined drumbeats — read the plan, check the box, move on. They are good. But summer? Summer wants something gentler. A practice you can sustain barefoot on a porch step with iced coffee and a Bible in your lap. Here is how we are resetting our quiet time for the season.

Step 1: Lower the bar (on purpose)

If your devotional life has felt strained, the answer is rarely "do more." The answer is to find the smallest faithful version of what you want, and protect it. For summer, we recommend a 15-minute rhythm: five minutes to settle, five minutes in the Word, five minutes to respond. That's it.

Fifteen minutes you actually keep is worth more than the forty-five-minute plan you abandon by July 8th. Grace, not grit, is what summer asks of us.

Step 2: Choose one psalm a week

Pick a single psalm for the week and place a scripture bookmark inside it. Read the same psalm every morning, Monday through Sunday. By midweek, lines will start to surface in the middle of your afternoons. By Sunday, you will be praying it without looking.

We have built a gentle four-week rotation for June:

  • Week 1 — Psalm 23 (the Shepherd in the green pastures)
  • Week 2 — Psalm 1 (planted by streams of water)
  • Week 3 — Psalm 19 (the heavens declare)
  • Week 4 — Psalm 121 (I lift my eyes to the hills)

Each of these psalms carries summer imagery — light, water, sky, growth. Let creation preach to you while you read.

Step 3: Take your quiet time outside

Whenever you can, take the practice into the morning light. A patio, a back step, a folding chair under a tree. Bring your Bible, one bookmark, a pen, and a notebook. Leave your phone inside. The natural quiet of early morning will do half of the spiritual work for you — your job is just to show up and pay attention.

Step 4: Use bookmarks to track the week's invitation

As you read your psalm each morning, listen for one invitation — a phrase, an image, a verse — that the Spirit keeps highlighting for you. Write it on the back of your bookmark. By Sunday, you will have a small, handwritten record of how God spoke to you that week.

Save these summer bookmarks in a small dish on your nightstand. By the end of August, you will have a stack of evidence that God was faithful in season, even in the slow weeks.

Step 5: End with one written sentence

Before you close your notebook, write a single sentence summary of your time. Not theology. Not a paragraph. One sentence. "Today He reminded me He leads me beside still waters." "Today I needed to hear that He never sleeps."

These sentences become a quiet kind of journal — short enough to keep, faithful enough to mean something when you flip back through in the fall.
